How To Fix A Leaky Bathroom Faucet

by J.Madeline 13 Aug 2025

1. Lead In

After using a faucet for a long time, it is common for it to leak. However, you can solve this problem by simply replacing the valve core inside the faucet, which is very easy to do. Follow the steps below.

2. Determine the location of the leak.

Leakage at the valve core/handle: This is usually caused by aging seals or damage to the valve core.

Leakage at the bottom of the faucet: This may be caused by loose installation or poor sealing of the water inlet pipe connection.

Dripping water outlet: This may be caused by wear of the internal gasket of the valve core or blockage by scale.

3. Specific repair steps

3.1 Close the angle valve: Most modern faucets have two water inlets for hot and cold water. Close both valves.

3.2 Remove the faucet handle:

  • A. Remove the decorative cover near the handle (usually located near the handle), revealing the screw holes.

  • B. Unscrew the fixing screws (hex screws or Phillips screws) and remove the handle.

  • C. Use a wrench to unscrew the valve core cover, remove the valve core, and take a photo for record.

  • D. Purchase a valve core of the same specification online or at a hardware store.

  • E. Reassemble the faucet by installing the new valve core, then reinstall the valve core cover and decorative cover.

  • F. Open the valve to test the faucet.
  • G. After confirming there are no leaks, reinstall all hardware screws.

4. Precautions

4.1 For some special faucets, it is recommended to contact the brand manufacturer's after-sales service to obtain special accessories.

4.2 For old faucets that have been used for a long time, it is recommended to replace them with new ones.

4.3 For those who are not very skilled with their hands, it is recommended to take photos before each step to avoid mistakes.

5. Judgment Table

Leak location Possible Cause Solution
Below the handle Valve core seal ring aging Replace the seal ring or valve core
Water outlet Gasket wear/scale Replace the gasket or descale
Bottom connection Loose water inlet pipe Secure the thread with tape

If you are not handy or the leak is complicated, it is recommended that you contact a professional plumber to handle it.
